Callis beats ranked opponent, but Nuggets, Rush fall

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Xavier University of Louisiana's Angelina Callis defeated Brenau's nationally ranked Kate Mazackova in straight sets Saturday, but that was the lone highlight for the Gold Nuggets in a 5-1 women's tennis loss to the Golden Tigers in the AUM Spring Invitational.Xavier's women (9-6) later lost 5-0 to Lindsey Wilson, and Xavier's men (7-5) lost 5-0 to Auburn Montgomery.

Brenau (6-4), ranked seventh, earned its third victory in two days against a ranked NAIA opponent. Xavier is 19th.Callis beat Mazackova, No. 43 in NAIA singles, 6-3, 7-5. Callis is unranked nationally but two places behind Mazackova in the South rankings.The dual was stopped when Hannah Thompson defeated Colleen McArthur 6-1, 6-2 for the clinching point. The No. 1 singles match between Xavier's Anastesia Opata and Brenau's Lyn See Choo -- ranked 18th and 23rd, respectively, in the NAIA -- did not finish.

Opata won the first set 6-4, and Choo won the second 6-2.Choo and Mazackova, No. 5 nationally in doubles, beat 14th-ranked Opata and Callis 8-2.Carmen Nelson and Melissa DeLoach won first sets in uncompleted singles matches against Lindsey Wilson (2-3). Callis missed a second victory against a ranked opponent when No. 46 Jessica Weyreuter defeated her 6-3, 6-4 in the clinching singles match.

Opata and Callis lost 8-4 to Trina Slapeka and Weyreuter, ranked 10th in doubles.Auburn Montgomery's men, ranked second and winner of five of the last eight NAIA national championships, improved to 8-0 after defeating the 13th-ranked Gold Rush for the second time in nine days. Xavier has dropped four straight -- its longest losing streak since February 2008 -- with three of the losses to ranked teams.

AUM displayed its depth and talent when Alberto Romeo, who didn't play in the Senators' 9-0 victory over XU on March 5, earned points in doubles and singles. Romeo beat Steffen Giles-Osborn 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
