Xavier teams win one of three at AUM Invitational Ed Cassiere 03/12/10 MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Xavier University of Louisiana women's tennis team, ranked 19th in the NAIA, lost 5-2 to 18th-ranked Shorter, then defeated Huntingdon 5-2 in the AUM Spring Invitational at Montgomery, Ala. Xavier's men, ranked 13th, lost 5-4 to 21st-ranked Lindsey Wilson.Anastesia Opata was 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles for the Gold Nuggets. She extended her singles winning streak to eight matches with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Huntingdon's Katie Scott.Singles victories by Mikhail Vaval and Hassan Abbas rallied the Gold Rush from a 4-2 deficit against Lindsey Wilson, but the Blue Raiders' Freddy Luciani defeated Steffen Giles-Osborn 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the final match.Xavier's men (7-4) have dropped three straight -- two to ranked opponents -- since winning seven in a row. The Nuggets (9-4) have won seven of their last eight, and they snapped the five-match win streak of Huntingdon (6-2), an NCAA Division III member.Xavier's women will play Saturday at 9 a.m. against seventh-ranked Brenau and 2 p.m. against 15th-ranked Lindsey Wilson. The XU men will play at 9 a.m. against 24th-ranked Shorter and 2 p.m. against seventh-ranked Oklahoma Christian. |
