WSSU student-athletes shine on two courts

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Department of Athletics announced that Lady Rams freshman Kayla Carter and junior guard Andrew Jackson were named the WSSU Student-Athletes of the Week ending March 7, 2010.

Carter, a 6’0” freshman tennis player from Apex, North Carolina, led the Lady Rams tennis team to one of their best performances of the past two seasons. Playing at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Round-Up, the Lady Rams won three matches with wins over Savannah State, Norfolk State, and the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. Playing the number two position in both singles and doubles play, Carter took wins in all three matches, including taking a 6-1, 6-0 win against Savannah State’s Shannon Howard. She was also impressive in the Lady Rams’ other three matches at the event, scoring at least one singles point in each outing.

Jackson, a 6’2”, 180-pound junior guard from Wilmington, N.C., had a great effort last week, highlighted by scoring 13 points at South Carolina State, including hitting a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer to lead the Rams to a 61-59 win over the South Carolina State Bulldogs, the third-best team in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The win gave the Rams their fourth road win of the season. He also added three assists and a steal in the game. Jackson also added eight points against Bethune-Cookman earlier in the week.
