WSSU Women’s Tennis Drops Heartbreaker To Hampton 4-3 Chris Zona 03/09/10 Janelle Small’s defeat of Chelsea Chatman gives Hampton the edge SUMTER, S.C. – The Lady Rams tennis team very nearly defeated one of the MEAC’s perennial powers as Winston-Salem State fell just short in a 4-3 loss to Hampton University from the SCSU Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. WSSU opened the match by earning the coveted doubles point as Kayla Carter and Kalin Jarvis defeated Maria Ycaza and Tabita Daolio 8-6 at second doubles and the Lady Rams used a free point (via default) at third doubles to open the match ahead 1-0. Kayla Carter continued her stellar play as she defeated Baranese Myers 2-6, 6-3, 11-9 at second doubles and Kalin Jarvis earned another point via default as WSSU opened a 3-0 advantage. However, the Lady Pirates rallied to earn wins at first, third, fourth and fifth singles and stole a win away from the talented Lady Rams. The loss drops WSSU to 4-10 on the season while Hampton moves to 2-0 on the season with the victory. WSSU returns to action on Friday, March 12 in Baltimore, Md. as they face the Eagles of Coppin State University.
