Panthers Earn No. 5 Seed in South Regional

ATLANTA, Ga. – The NCAA announced Sunday that Clark Atlanta University’s (CAU) men’s basketball team has earned a spot in the NCAA Division-II Tournament as the number five seed in the South Regional. The Panthers last visit to the Division-II tournament was in 1996 in a 71-91 first-round loss to South Carolina Upstate.

On Sunday the team gathered in the Hall of Fame Room of the Vivian W. Henderson Gymnasium for the Men’s Selection Show, and after watching three quarters of the tournament bracket fill up, the Panthers learned of their position and opponent. The No. 20 nationally-ranked Panthers of Clark Atlanta (24-6) enter the as the No. 5 seed in the regional tournament and will face the No. 4 seed Valdosta State Blazers (20-4) of the Gulf South Conference (GSC).

The Blazers dropped a 58-47 decision to Arkansas Tech on Saturday, March 6 in the GSC championship, while the Panthers fell 57-61 to the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University in the SIAC championship game. Led by SIAC Most Valuable Player, Najee Lane, and Coach of the Year, Darryl Jacobs, the team is eager to represent the SIAC in the South Regional.

The winner faces the winner of the Tuskegee-Arkansas Tech on March 14 in the regional semi-finals. Regional tournament game times will be announced this week.
