Veteran coach with more than 20 years of experience will lead Lady Rams

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Winston-Salem State University has named Walter Mebane Interim Head Coach of their women’s basketball team to lead the Lady Rams in their final seven games of the 2009-10 season.

Mebane, who has been working in the coaching profession for over two decades, will bring a wealth of experiential knowledge to the Lady Rams’ program as he steps in for Dee Stokes who was relieved of her duties on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

“I have watched Coach Mebane for a long time. He is truly a professional at what he does and he has a proven track record” WSSU Director of Athletics, Bill Hayes said. “Coach Mebane is a perfect fit to lead our women for the remainder of the season.” Hayes added.

Mebane is no stranger to Winston-Salem State University as he has spent nearly an entire season as a volunteer assistant coach on WSSU head men’s basketball coach Bobby Collins’ staff.

The Lady Rams will benefit from Mebane’s experience as a Division I head coach as he served four years leading the Lady Pirates of Hampton University. In his time as Hampton’s head coach, Mebane posted an impressive 70-77 record in the ultra-competitive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference where he helped HU to a 51-35 conference mark.

A native of Durham, N.C., Mebane attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied Industrial Relations and Education.

A national search for a permanent head coach for the Winston-Salem State University women’s basketball team is ongoing.
