Rams Close Out Savannah State Tiger Invitational With Fifth-Place Finish

Devin Cherry and Jerell Fields each card rounds of 77; Rams score a 317

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Kevin Veach led the Rams with a round of 75 and for the second consecutive day WSSU’s Devin Cherry fired a round of 77 as he was joined by teammate Jerrell Fields who also carded a round of 77 as three WSSU players shot in the 70’s and helped the Rams of Winston-Salem State University post a team total of 317 to close out the 2009 Savannah State University Tiger Fall Invitational with a fifth-place finish.

Kevin Veach turned in the lowest round of the tournament for the Rams as he shot a four-over-par 75 en route to a two-day total of 158.

Cherry’s two-day total led the Rams with back-to-back rounds of 77 en route to a sixth-place finish in the individual medalist competition with a total of 154.

Fields bettered his opening-round 78 by one stroke on Tuesday by carding a six-over-par 77 as he closed out tournament play with a two-day total of 155, good enough for a tie for 11th place in individual medalist play.

Henderson Golf Club, a par-71, 6,650-yard course would prove to be no match for the remaining Rams’ golfers as Michael Asbury recorded a round of 88 and Kenneth Lathan scored a 98 in final-round play.

Virginia State University posted a final-round total of 302 to capture the team title as they bested the 14-team field with a 622 total.

The Rams will take the remainder of the winter off before returning to action March 19-21, 2010 at Winston Lake Golf Club as they host the WSSU Spring Golf Challenge.
