Lady Rams Fall Short in Three-Set Loss to Norfolk State

Improved effort not enough for Lady Rams in loss

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams could never get things going as the team suffered a three-set loss to the Norfolk State Lady Spartans (6-18), Sunday afternoon. The Lady Rams had their struggles struggled to find their rhythm while facing an efficient Spartan squad in Sunday’s match.



The Lady Rams had an improved offensive effort with 23 total kills, but were outgunned by Norfolk State’s 36 total kills and .307 attack percentage. Defensively, the Lady Rams had a solid day with 20 team digs and 5.0 total blocks. Senior Georgette Allen led the way with a solo block and a pair of block assists. WSSU junior hitter Ashley Harris led the Lady Rams’ attack with a team-high eight kills in the loss.



The match was a close on in the early going as the two teams battled to a 12-12 first set tie. However, Norfolk State would outscore the Lady Rams 13-5 to close on the 17-25 WSSU loss in the opening set. The Lady Rams allowed four straight points to the Spartans twice during the run. In the second set, the Lady Rams fell behind early, 4-10. Unfortunately, the team would never get any closer, taking the 16-25 second set loss. The team got off to another slow start, falling behind, 2-7. The team allowed three NSU service aces during the run to fall behind in the final set. However, senior Annika Barnwell posted a kill, followed by a pair of service aces midway through the set that brought the Lady Rams back into the match, 15-19. However, the team would never get any closer, taking the 18-25 loss in the final set.
