SU SOCCER POST SECOND STRAIGHT VICTORY Brandon Willis Montgomery, AL – The Southern University Lady Jaguars soccer team posted their first winning streak of the season by defeating the Alabama State University Lady Hornets 7-1. Southern (3-13, 1-1 SWAC) shot a season high 20 in the first half. Junior Nakesha Rolle started things off with one of her two goals when sophomore Jennifer Volcy sent a cross from the right end line. Rolle’s second goal came five minutes later when senior Tiffany Cantu sent the ball from behind the fifty which gave Rolle the opportunity to beat ASU’s goalie one on one. Volcy got into the scoring party at the 20:09 mark when senior Amanda Soto-Ortiz sent a cross from the right side of the field. Sophomore Natasha Witt scored her second goal of the season at the 27th minute off of a penalty kick. Freshman Starr Hines scored the final goal of the first half for SU, as Soto-Ortiz sent a shot over the top of the defense to allow Hines to slide right pass the goalie for her second goal of the season. Hines scored the game winning goal against Alabama A&M on Friday to give the Blue and Gold their second straight victory of 2009. Cantu and Witt both scored in the second half to help give Southern a 7-1 victory and their third of the season. Alabama State’s Franka Schauss 44:32 goal was the only bright spot for the Lady Hornets. The win will carry the Lady Jaguars into their final regular season weekend. On Friday, October 30, SU will host Prairie View A&M University to a 4:00 pm contest. Then on Sunday, November 1, senior day, they will welcome Texas Southern University. Start time for that game is 1:00 pm. Both matches are conference play. |
