Winston-Salem State Hosts 2009 Down South Tournament

Norfolk State takes early lead in season opening tournament

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State University bowling program played host to the 2009 Down South Tournament with the opening rounds played on Saturday at the Creekside Lanes in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Norfolk State Spartans and the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers opened the tournament taking the top two spots after the first day of competition.

Norfolk State posted a team total of 4,297 total pins to edge out Prairie View A&M’s 4,282 total pins. Norfolk State’s Cathryn Myrick took the first day individual lead with 957 total pins and a 191.40 average. The Prairie View A&M duo of Lejewlia Lewis and Cynthia Veney placed second and third consecutively on the first day. Lewis posted 956 total pins, one behind Myrick, and a 191.20 average while Veney totaled 934 total pins and a 186.80 average.

Winston-Salem State was unable to compete in the tournament. The other nine teams will return to action tomorrow with Baker games play.
