WSSU track & field shines among elite athletes

GREENSBORO, NC – With national and international track & field stars all around the Irwin Belk Track at Aggie Stadium, it was the Winston-Salem State University Rams and Lady Rams who shined at the 2009 International Friendship & Freedom Games, Saturday. The Rams and Lady Rams had more record setting performances and put Ram pride in front of an international field of competition.

The Rams and Lady Rams dominated the high jump with first place finishes in both the men’s and women’s high jumps. WSSU senior Jessica Peaks got things started when she placed first in the women’s high jump at 5’6” (1.67m) while junior Nathan Summerville finished first in the men’s high jump at 6’5” (1.95m). Peaks outjumped three athletes from the University of South Carolina to take first place in the event. WSSU freshman Darrell Wesley finished fourth in the men’s high jump at 5’10” (1.75m). Also posting a first place finish at the event was WSSU freshman Andrew Chebii won the men’s 1500m run 4:00.63 while fellow freshman Desmond Wiggan finished second in the event at 4:03.60. Chebii wasn’t done as he took first place in the men’s 800m run as well, finishing at 1:53.49.

WSSU freshman hurdler Crystal Webley continued her rewrite of the WSSU track & field record book when she broke her own school record in the women’s 100m hurdles preliminaries and in the finals. She first broke the record in the prelims at 14.58, but bettered the effort in the event finals with a 14.56.

Though the Rams and Lady Rams had some stellar performances at the event, the highlight of the day came when WSSU freshman sprinter Denesha Jiles lined up in the first heat of the women’s 200m dash. The Winston-Salem State freshman found herself lined up in a heat that featured four Olympic sprinters, including Marshevet Hooker, Rachelle Boone-Smith, and Mechelle Lewis of the United States Olympic team, along with Bahamian gold medalist Chandra Sturrup. The freshman didn’t disappoint as she carried the red & white to an eighth-place finish in 25.15.

The Rams and Lady Rams will return to action next weekend when the teams head to the 116th Penn Relays.
