| NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK FAN POLL WINNERS FOR JAN. 23 Ruben R. Perez, Jr. 1/23/09 Hartly, DE - The results are in for the third weekly Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN) fan poll National Player of the Week and the N.C. Central Eagle Nation has set the stage with 1,347 votes for between both of their candidates in Division I men and women voting. HSRN developed the fan poll to get all HBCU alumni, students and fans involved with the national selection and to also give everyone a chance to consistently keep up with the individual performances around the country. The HSRN web site and our broadcasts are designed to keep everyone abreast of all action around HBCU athletic competition. The NCCU Eagle Nation had a good week, but we must also note the Panther Nation of Clark-Atlanta for squeezing their star pass Fayetteville State 139-103. Jamar Briscoe (N.C. Central) – Div. I/Men, Jori Nwachukwu (N.C. Central) – Div. I/Women, Anthony Wynn – (Saint Paul's) – Div. II/Men and Shantrell Moss- (Clark Atlanta) – Div. II/Women. The HSRN National Player of the Week Fan Poll will run each week from Tuesday thru Thursday morning, giving fans across the country a chance to vote for their favorite player (s). This week the poll was pushed back a day because of President Obama’s Inauguration on Tuesday, January 20. Below are the listed performances of each National Player of the Week for the week of January 4 thru January 10. Division I - Men Jamar Briscoe - N.C. Central (G, 5’10, 155, Sr., Baltimore, MD) - During a 2-1 week for NCCU, Briscoe averaged 24.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals, while shooting 21-of-38 from the field (.553), including 8-of-15 from three-point range (.533), and 23-of-29 from the free throw line (.793). Amassed 31 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals vs. Chowan to earn the 2009 BC Powder Classic Most Outstanding Player award. In this week voting, Jamar received 478 votes. Division I - Women Jori Nwachukwu - N.C. Central (C, 5’10, Jr., Upper Marlboro, MD) - During a 2-0 week for NCCU, Nwachukwu averaged 30.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists. 2.0 steals and 0.5 blocked shots per contest, while shooting 71.8 percent from the field (28-for-29). In a 77-61 win at Norfolk State, Nwachukwu collected 34 points, 13 rebounds, a career-high 4 assists and a steal. In this week’s voting Jori received a HSRN record 869 votes. Division II – Men Anthony Wynn - Saint Paul's (F, 6’5, Sr, Richmond, VA ) - averaged 17 points per game this week scoring 10 against FSU and 24 in a win over JCSU. Each game Wynn scored double-doubles posting 10 and 18 rebounds. Wynn has three consecutive games of scoring double-doubles and continues to lead his team in scoring and rebounds. In this week’s voting Anthony received 66 votes. Division II - Women Shantrell Moss- Clark Atlanta (G, 5'9, Sr., Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Averaged 17.7 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists in the Lady Panthers’ wins over Miles, Lane and Kentucky State. Her best game was a 15 point, 13 rebound performance against Kentucky State on January 17. In this week’s voting, Shantrell received 139 votes. |
