Day One of the 2005 SWAC Women’s Soccer Tournament saw
four teams in action with the states of Mississippi,
Louisiana, and Texas all being showcased. In the
opener, Mississippi Valley State and Prairie View A&M
played tough with the Devilettes getting a goal in the
last six minutes of play to gain a 3-2 victory. In
game two, Jackson State jumped out early on Southern
and did not let up as the Lady Tigers ended the day
with a 5-1 win.
Game One: Mississippi Valley State 3, Prairie View
A&M 2
Sheena Cussen scored an unassisted goal in the 84th
minute of play to give the Devilettes a one-goal win.
The match was a back-and-forth affair with both teams
taking their shots at goal. The game, offensive
minded for both squads, saw the teams trade goals.
Both teams found themselves in a good battle as MVSU
and PVAM each scored a goal in the first 45 minutes.
A Nicole Karsay-to-Brooke Falke goal opened the
scoring for MVSU in the 23rd minute of play. Prairie
View tied the game as Catherine Burnley found Mayra
Castillo at the 32:36 mark to knot the score at 1-1.
After intermission, Pella Hand connected with Sonia
Curvelo giving the Devilettes a 2-1 lead. PVAM came
back les than five minutes later as a Kallena Marshall
corner kick found Catherine Burnley to tie the score
at 2-2. After 20 minutes of defensive pressure and
offensive-minded attacking, Cussen scored the
unassisted goal to give MVSU the win and to send the
Devilettes to the tournament semifinals.
MVSU’s Maria Del Guercio picked up the win while Amy
Miller’s 19 saves were not enough to keep PVAM in
contention.
