Baker, LA – The Southern University Lady Jaguar soccer team dropped their eighth straight game when the Lady Panther escaped with a 2-1 win at Clark Park in Baker, LA today.

“The team played well today a lot better than I’ve seen earlier in the season,” said interim head coach John Knighten.  “We showed a lot of improvement today but we still have to work on some things.”

The game started out a little different as freshman Merdlyn Matthews scored 4:00 minutes into the game to take the lead, a feat the Lady Jaguars hadn’t accomplished this season.  Junior Nicole Joseph started the game at goalie for the injured Ashley Stevenson.  Joseph recorded four saves but allowed one goal to make the half-time score 1-1.  Stevenson found out she was cleared by the doctor at the beginning of the game.  She went in at the beginning of the second half and ended with two saves but allowed the winning goal for the Lady Panthers who took home a 1-2 win.

“We are still working with Ashley as she is dealing with a lot nagging injuries,” Knighten said.  “She is getting better each game.”

Southern (0-8, 0-6 SWAC) found out before the game that all games versus Southwestern Athletic Conference opponents count but divisional games will determine who will attend the post season tournament.  Based on the record versus western division foes SU still has an opportunity to participate.  Currently they are ranked fourth in the division.

Southern will return to action when Texas Southern University visits on Sunday, October 16th.  The game will be played at Clark Park in Baker, LA at 1:00 p.m
