| DEVILETTES SET TONE FOR SEASON WITH WIN OVER NICHOLLS STATE Roderick Mosley August 26, 2005 Thibodeaux, LA---The Mississippi Valley State University Devilettes soccer team set the tone for Valley’s 2005 athletic season with a 3-0 win over the Lady Colonels of Nicholls State University in the season opener for both teams. Junior, forward Sonia Curvelo led the Devilettes with two goals while sophomore midfielder Angela Hunter added a goal and an assist. “The girls played well they showed real hunger to win,” said student-assistant coach John Marshall. “I’m very proud of the way we came out tonight and the intensity we showed. This is what we will look for to carry us throughout the year.” After 33 minutes of back and forth play Hunter opened the scoring on a solo shot in the right corner of the net just past the out stretched arms of Nicholls’ goal keeper Sarah Neunzig for the only score of the first half. With overcast skies looming overhead and Hurricane Katrina blowing in the Gulf of Mexico just miles away the Devilettes put the game away when Hunter found Curvelo on a beautiful cross that she kneed in for her first goal 15 minutes into the second half. Curvelo added a second goal when Meghan Eddy found her at the top of the box for a shot just over the head of Neunzig. Defensively, Valley only allowed three shots on goal while keeper Maria Del Guercio picked up three saves. “Defensively we held our shape very well for the first game. The rotation was there and the ladies did a great job of taking away scoring opportunities,” said Marshall. The Devilettes (1-0) will take the field again Sunday as they remain in the “Sportsman Paradise” and travel to north Louisiana to face the Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech University. -MVSU- |
