2005 SWAC Women’s Soccer Tournament
GSU campus – Grambling, LA
November 3-6, 2005
One thing is for sure: there will be a new champion
of SWAC Women’s Soccer when the weekend is completed.
With two games on tap for Day Two, fans expected to
see both finesse and physical play from the four teams
in action. However, most expected to see at least one
of last season’s finalists return to the title game.
In the opener, Mississippi Valley State and Alabama
A&M made history as the first game to be decided in
extra time. The second game saw finesse and quickness
outlast physical play.
Game Three: Mississippi Valley State 2, Alabama A&M 1
(shootout: 4-3 MVSU)
Two of the more explosive teams in the conference met
to decide the first finalist for the 2005 title.
However, no one dreamed that the contest would come
down to extra time and eventually a shootout. Alabama
A&M struck early in the first half as Alberta Annan
found Belinda Kanda in the middle of the field for a
1-0 lead. Mississippi Valley came back in the second
period as Pella Hand found Nicole Karsay who beat an
out of position goalie to net the game at 1-1.
During the two periods of overtime, neither team
gained a significant advantage. After 20 minutes of
play, both teams chose five players and a goalie to
participate in the shootout. Both teams scored on
their first two attempts before MVSU missed on their
third. AAMU then made the next attempt for a 3-2
advantage. MVSU then nailed an attempt to tie it at
three. AAMU then missed and MVSU made its final
attempt for a 4-3 advantage. AAMU failed on its fifth
attempt to give the Delta Devilettes the win.
