BOVINA, Miss. – Alcorn State goalkeeper Tatum Irving
strapped an icepack to her knee and then asked, “How
many saves did I have.”
The answer? Just enough.
Irving made 20 saves to keep Alabama State (2-10-1) at
bay, and Alcorn scored two goals in the final 15
minutes to earn a 2-1 victory over the Hornets at
Link-Mlakar Soccer Fields.
Alcorn’s Lindsay Flaggs scored an unassisted goal in
the 30th minute of the second half, and Ashley Rankin
scored the game-winner off Quintaya Miller’s corner
kick with four minutes to play.
“It’s always good to get a win,” Alcorn coach Richard
Zvinavashe said. “Tatum played great.”
Alcorn (2-12) fell behind 1-0 when Alabama State’s
Maiya Moore scored midway through the second half.
Alabama State controlled the action throughout the
game, tallying 31 shots to just eight for Alcorn.
Irving, however, provided inspired play for Alcorn, as
she made several acrobatic saves to preserved a
scoreless tie at halftime.
The victory was especially sweet for Alcorn team 7-0
to Alabama A&M on Friday. Alberta Annan scored three
goals for A&M, and Belinda Kanda added two goals and
an assist for A&M.
