Pirate Sailors Finish 8th at Annual Home Event - MAISA/SAISA Intersectional

Mar. 27, 2005
Hampton, Va. - In the second event of the year, and sporting a brand-new fleet of boats, the Hampton University Sailing Team finished in 8th place at their annual home event in the MAISA/SAISA Intersectional. The event was held at Strawberry Banks on the campus of HU.
The Pirates started out good on Saturday as the weather held up on what was scheduled to be a rainy day by the bay.
Candice Franklin (Atlanta, Ga.) and Michelle Lance (Atlanta, Ga.), normally both serving as crew in races, tried their hands at skipper in B Division competition. They managed to come away with a second place finish in the event's third race. However, that would be just one of two top-5 finishes for HU in B Division all weekend.
The other B Division team for HU was that of Blake Matthews and Bryana Nicholas (San Diego, Calif.).
In A Division, the Pirates finished up 7th overall in the group. The two sets of sailors were Gabrielle Lyons (Trinidad & Tobago) and Marcellus Wesley (Washington, D.C.), as well as the team of Tiffany Folkes and Maranda Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio).
In A Division, HU finished with four top-5 finishes.
St. Mary's College, led by Adrienne Patterson, Maggie Lunkes, Jenny Gervais, Doria MacKenzie and Katie Tinder, took first place for the overall event with a point total of 45. Georgetown finished in second place just behind St. Mary's with 47 points.
The weather, as stated earlier, held up on what was scheduled to be a rainy weekend in the Hampton Roads area. The skies were gray, but rain was held off by sweeping winds.
On Saturday, winds started with NE winds at 5-8kts and flat water which held for most of the day. Wind turned to the east later in the day and varied in velocity between 5-8 knots all day. Sunday brought winds out of the east at 8-10 knots.
The Pirates will take to the seas once again next weekend as they travel to compete in the OCC Spring Open at Toms River, New Jersey.
