Chestertown, Md. – Hampton University Sailing qualified for the War Memorial Regatta over the weekend as they clipped their way to a third place finish in the Washington College Open (South/#2) held in Chestertown, Maryland on Saturday and Sunday.

HU found itself in great shape going into Sunday morning as they sat comfortably in first place. The Pirates followed that up in B Division action as they took second place with sailors Ray Potter, Yasmina Beckles and Bryana Nicholas. HU tallied 30 points, sitting just one off the lead (29) behind St. Mary’s.

In A Division action, Omari Scott and Candice Franklin helped the Pirates take fourth place with 53 points … just four points outside of third place behind the University of Pennsylvania (49).

Weather on Saturday aided the Pirates as a nice West/Northwesterly wind whipped in at 14-18 kts all day. Races were held in Modified Olympic, as well as Modified Windward-Leeward along the Chester River. Eight races were allowed to be run before bad weather came through the area heading into early evening.

On Sunday, winds remained steady while races stayed the same as well. Few protests were filed, but only a single elimination came in the form of Penn’s 11B and 12B races due to an infraction of the rulebook.

HU will head to the waters once again next weekend when they take part in the Hanbury Regatta in nearby Newport News. The event will be hosted by Christopher Newport University on both Saturday and Sunday.
