Washington, D.C. - Hampton University Sailing once again took place in a women's open over the weekend, and managed to sail their way to a 12th place finish overall at the annual Arrigan Memorial Regatta/South #2 hosted by Georgetown University in Washington D.C.

There was a total of 12 races sailed in both A and B Division, equaling 24 races for the entire weekend. Courses were sailed in Gold Cup, as well as Triangle Windward format.

Saturday was a great day for sailing. Winds came out of the northeast at 12-20mph, and the sun was shining with no clouds along the Potomac River.

In A Division, Hampton University head sailing coach Carolyn Grant used two female sailors in the form of Gabrielle Lyons and Tiffany Folkes. The pair ended up finishing seventh overall in A Division action.

They also pulled in two (2) top-5 finishes on race #5 and race #9. They came in fourth and fifth respectively for both races. The two sailors posted 105 points overall for the weekend.

As for B Division, the Pirates used Yasmina Beckles and Maranda Smith for the race sessions.

Beckles and Smith tallied a 14th place finish overall with 155 points. This includes three (3) top-10 finishes in races #6, #9 and #10.

Most of the races took place on Saturday as the weather, as stated earlier, was primed for sailing. Sunday, however, produced light winds all day long.

St. Mary's College took home the top prize for the weekend, followed up closely by the U.S. Naval Academy and host Georgetown University.

The Pirates will now prepare for next weekend's competition at the CNU Open in nearby Newport News, Virginia. It is being hosted by Christopher Newport.
