Bethune-Cookman University made a hard
charge on the final day of competition
to take second place at the Stetson/CFSC
Invitational at the Victoria Hills Golf
Course in nearby DeLand, Fla. on Monday
and Tuesday. For Bethune-Cookman, it
was their fourth consecutive Top five
finish of the year to date.
The Wildcats sat in a tie for fifth
place after the first two rounds of play
on Monday. Florida Gulf Coast, eventual
winners of the tournament, shot an
absolute lights-out affair with a team
score of 880 (+16). The Wildcats scored
a total of 905 (+41).
B-CU’s
Dan
Venema was one of the players
on the charge for the Mighty Wildcats as
he shot a three-round score of 225 to
finish in eighth place with a nine-over
par total. Venema finished with rounds
of 75 all the way through staying
consistent.
USC Upstate’s Josh Gallman led all
golfers as the individual medalist with
a score of 212 (-4) to finish as the
only golfer with an under-par advantage.
Also finishing in the Top 10 for the
event was sophomore
Willie
Mack III with a ninth place
tying spot with a score of 226 (+10) on
rounds of 77, 76 and 73 … showing his
increasing edge each round.
Juan Ronderos
also played well for the ‘Cats with a
tie at 17th on a total of 228 (+12),
while teammates
Carl
Corbin and
Chris
Dunn tied at 19th with a 229
(+13). For Corbin, his 19th place
position was the lowest of the 2007 fall
campaign after finishing 18th in the
first event of the year at the Sea Trail
Intercollegiate. However, it was his
highest-total score with a 13-over par
performance.
In fact, all Wildcat golfers collected
the highest scores of the season,
although it was a three-round event.
Stetson, USC Upstate and Rollins rounded
out the Top five teams in the
tournament.
Florida Gulf Coast’s Daniel Mazziotta,
Robert Taylor, Michael Hart and Kyle
Henderson all finished in the Top five
as individual performers. Todd Shagin
of Rollins was also in there with a tie
at the fourth place spot.
This was the second to last event of the
season for the men’s team as they will
now finish up a strong fall showing at
the Savannah State Tiger Invitational on
Nov. 13 and 14 in Savannah, Ga.
