Charlotte, NC --
North Greenville University leads the
team standings after the first day of
the seventh annual J. Ralph Hargett
Memorial Intercollegiate Men’s Golf
Tournament Monday at the Olde Sycamore
Golf Plantation. North Greenville shot a
304 on day one, leading the 10-team
field by three strokes. The Rams of
Winston-Salem State currently sit in 10th
place after first-round action.
Catawba College is in second place with
a first-day 307. Brevard College,
Belmont Abbey College’s B team and
Lincoln Memorial University are tied for
third at 312. The Wingate University
Blue (B) team is seventh with a 317. The
Wingate Gold team (A team) is one stroke
back in eighth place with a 318 while
the Rams sit in 10th with a
first-day aggregate total of 397.
North Greenville senior Cole West
(Greer, S.C.) and Charlotte sophomore
Stefan Wiedergruen (Waiblingen, Germany)
share the individual lead, as both
players shot a one-over-par 73 on the
6965-yard, par-72 Olde Sycamore Golf
Plantation layout. Wiedergruen is one of
four Charlotte 49ers playing as
individuals in the Hargett event.
Wingate sophomore Shane Dyer (Watertown,
N.Y.) is one of six players tied for
third with a 74. Dyer carded a 38 on the
front nine and an even-par 36 on the
back nine Monday. Bulldog junior Jaymes
Nowicki (Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomore
Chet DeLong (Madison, Ohio) are two of
four golfers tied for 10th place with
first-day totals of 76. Nowicki is
playing the Hargett event as an
individual, while DeLong is a member of
the Wingate Blue (B) team.
The remainder of the team leader board
includes sixth-place Tri-County (S.C.)
Technical College (315), ninth-place
Mars Hill College (325) and 10th place
Winston-Salem State University (397).
The Rams most impressive performance of
the day once again belonged to Joshua
Vogler. Vogler shot a team-best 78 on
the day as he turned in a first-day
round of six over par. Vogler’s 78
earns him a 16th place
ranking headed into Tuesday’s final
round of play.
The Rams’ Jerell Fields shot a
first-round 91 while Steven Mason turned
in a 94 on the first day of play as the
Rams had three players record rounds
less than 100.
Thirty-three golfers shot rounds in the
70s on a beautiful spring Monday
including Vogler who fired a 78.
Sixty-six golfers competed in the first
round of play. The seventh annual J.
Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate
Tournament concludes Tuesday.
