Tucker, GA – For the sixth time the SIAC took home the coveted Pioneer Bowl trophy with Tuskegee prevailing 17-7 over Johnson C. Smith, thus giving Tuskegee their 5th Pioneer Bowl victory.  Tuskegee was given the royal treatment; visiting NASCAR’s Lowe’s Motor Speedway and received a surprise speech from General Sadler, a member of the air force that flew with the Tuskegee Airmen.  General Sadler gave remarks and stated “I feel a great tie to the men of Tuskegee haven flown and served with some of the Tuskegee Airmen.”  Following the tour of the facility all 17 seniors took their turns riding in 2007 Toyota Camry’s around the 1.5 mile track.  The ride was a big hit with the Camry’s reaching an average of 90 mph in the banked curves of the track and 120 mph on the straight-aways.

Following the NASCAR visit Tuskegee traveled to the Omni hotel for the 2nd Annual SIAC Educational Forum where distinguished professionals, many of whom were from the Atlanta area, spoke to the team on different subjects including “How to manage the transition from college to your professional career.”  Speakers included Dr. Jimmy Calloway, PhD, Associate Professor at Georgia State University, Ivory Brown, Attorney and Author, and Chris Kouri, Director of Governmental Affairs and General Council at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

The SIAC also hosted the annual Football Awards Luncheon.  During the banquet the 1st team, 2nd team, All Academic, and Superlative Award winners received their recognition.  Tuskegee University, although they did not have any members on the All Conference Team, did receive recognition of five athletes that made the SIAC Honorable Mention team including Kevin Huff, Lorenzo Crawford, Anthony Driver, Jonathan Hall, and Roosevelt Echeverry.

The 1st Annual Pioneer Bowl Battle of the Bands was much like it was advertised, a showdown of great bands and great music.  West Charlotte High School preformed an exhibition that got the crowd very hyped and ready for the Battle to begin.  Virginia State University took home the grand prize of $5,000 after a stellar performance by their band and drum majors.  Benedict College took home the second place prize of $1,500, losing by a mere one point to Virginia State.  Tuskegee University and Johnson C. Smith both finished tied for third in a very close contest.

The Pioneer Bowl IX was another epic battle dominated by defense with Tuskegee pulling away to take their fifth victory in seven appearances and the second consecutive victory in Charlotte.  SIAC Commissioner, Dr. William E. Lide, when asked about the success of the Pioneer Bowl commented, “The template is set and once again I am proud to say that the SIAC and Tuskegee was victorious, and the Pioneer Bowl is a success.  We have turned this game into an established Bowl Game with teams making visits to different locations, including NASCAR and the Bank of America Stadium, as well as receiving a national sponsor such as FORD.  Our kids received gifts from some of our corporate sponsors like Russell and Coca-Cola.  Now the only thing we have to do is increase the Pioneer Bowl fan base.  We thank the city of Charlotte for their hospitality and we appreciate their valiant attempt to host our game, especially last year after the game was moved here following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.  We feel that the game was a success here in Charlotte, but there is a high chance that the game will be moved back into Georgia or SIAC country where the fan base for football and the SIAC is very high.  I am extremely proud of Tuskegee for their victory, their kids worked hard all season and they deserved this victory.  And we definitely appreciate the Tuskegee fan base for coming and making this event a success.”
