Wildcat Bowlers Finish Up Weekend with 10-2 Overall Mark at MEAC
Round-Up (GREENSBORO, N.C. – ) Bethune-Cookman College got back to the lanes over the weekend as they posted a 10-2 overall mark at the MEAC Round-Up in Greensboro, North Carolina. The event, hosted by North Carolina A&T State University, featured the MEAC Southern Division against the Northern Division in a three-day event from Friday through Sunday afternoon. Bethune-Cookman, entering the weekend ranked 15th in the latest NTCA [National Tenpin Coaches Association] poll, rolled away the competition on Friday as they finished the day with a perfect 5-0 record. Sarah Circle (North Augusta, S.C.) led the way for the ‘Cats in three of four matches, collecting a team tournament-high of 235 against Coppin State. B-CC defeated Hampton, Delaware State, Howard, Coppin State and the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore on the first day of action. UMES entered the weekend having earned their highest ever ranking in the NTCA poll, released last week, sitting in the number five spot this month. Chelsea Squillacote (Ormond Beach, Fla.) was a delightful surprise as a second-best bowler, in a sense, for the Wildcats she collected personal high scores of 211 and 209 in matches against Hampton and Howard, respectively. Ta’Shieka Green (Colorado City, Tex.) added in a powerful game of 212, while teammate Angela Murrell (Coal City, Ill.) pitched in a 204 to help B-CC top UMES. On Saturday, the Wildcats came out sluggish, dropping their only team match of the weekend against last year’s MEAC Tournament runner-up Morgan State University. “I don’t understand it, but we always come out sluggish early on the second day of competition,” exclaimed B-CC head coach Jerry Norris. “We had a long team meeting on the bus after the morning session on Saturday, and the team came back stronger than ever for the afternoon. The team, in essence, bowled as a team.” And bowl as a team, they did, as B-CC dropped just the one team match (vs. Morgan State) and the baker match (vs. Hampton) in the morning, but swept away their remaining three baker matches. In those matches, it was Green, Circle and Sara Driver (DeLand, Fla.) performing well for the ‘Cats. But the surprise of the weekend was the play of freshman Chelsea Squillacote and her play, according to Coach Norris. “Chelsea did well for us this weekend, proving she is going to be good if she continues to work hard and practice,” stated Norris. “But our top three of Circle, Driver and Green were just spectacular when we needed them. And Angela Murrell gave us another spark that we needed as well, as she always does.” The Wildcats knocked off the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Coppin State and Howard on Saturday in baker matches, with the only loss—as previously stated, coming against Hampton. On Sunday, the ‘Cats bowled in two baker matches, collecting victories against Morgan State and Delaware State. Bethune-Cookman will now prepare for their next competition when they travel to an MEAC Southern Division Shootout next weekend in Norfolk, Virginia. Norfolk State will serve as the host school for that competition.
