The National Collegiate Athletic Conference (NCAA), in conjunction with the Black Coaches and Administrators (BCA) recently announced that Kentucky State’s (KSU) Women’s Head Basketball Coach, Serena King-Coleman, was selected to attend the 2011 Achieving Coaching Excellence (ACE) Program. The program, which takes place from June 5-8, will be held in Indianapolis, Ind.

Columbia, SC--Kennie Eberhart’s playing days are over at Benedict but they will continue on the professional level. Eberhart signed with the Seattle Mountaineers of the American Basketball Association better known as the ABA. Eberhart, who played two years for Head Coach Fred Watson, was the leading scorer during his junior year as he helped lead the Tigers to a second place finish. He was named to the second team All-SIAC.

Virginia Union University has announced that Lydia Evans, a 6-3 forward/center from Upper Marlboro, Md., has signed to play women's basketball for the Lady Panthers.
Evans, who led Riverdale Baptist High School to a 29-6 record in 2010-11, was named to the fourth-team All-Regional girls' basketball team and was a member of the Private School squad in the Prince George's County Girls All-Star basketball game.

Virginia Union University's Braxton Byerson received his All-CIAA Team Award and teammate James Theus received his CIAA All-Rookie Team Award during the 2011 CIAA Men's Basketball Award Ceremony, held on Tuesday, March 1, at the Charlotte Convention Center in Charlotte, N.C.
It was Byerson's third straight All-CIAA Award while Theus became the first Panther named to the CIAA All-Rookie Team since Brandon Byerson was named to the All-Rookie team in 2007.

The Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State University (22-9) are back on top of the SIAC, with a 69-54 win over Miles College Lady Bears (21-8), to capture the 2011 SIAC Women’s Basketball Championship. The win gave Coach Lonnie Bartley his 10th SIAC title. Today’s championship gives him and the Lady Wildcats their 2nd in the past three years.

Byerson was the only VUU men's player to receive All-CIAA honors. Byerson leads Virginia Union with a 21.0 points per game average.

INSTITUTE, WV – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-3) fell short in a 75-65 road loss to the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets (3-7) Saturday afternoon. The game was a hard fought affair on both sides of the court in a contest that stayed close for all 40 minutes. The two teams combined for 11 ties and 14 lead changes, but the Lady Rams’ effort was not enough in the tough loss. The Lady Rams finish the season series against the Yellow Jackets tied, with both teams winning on their home court.

(Raleigh, NC)-  Shaw’s Lady Bears used a strangling first half defense and a 15-0 run to easily defeat visiting Queen’s College 62-42 in a game played at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium The Lady Bears held the Royals to only five points from the floor in the first half, and a paltry 7.4 shooting percentage (two for 27).  Queen’s did manage to hit 11 of 15 from the free throw line, but still only finished the half with 16 points.

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana's Keldra Hall was selected Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week in women's basketball for Nov. 22-28.
Hall, a 6-foot junior center from Dallas and a graduate of Molina High School and Angelina College, averaged 10 points and 8.5 rebounds as XU, ranked 22nd in NAIA Division I, split a pair of games at the Xavier Classic. Hall had 13 points and a career-best 11 rebounds Friday in the Gold Nuggets' 47-43 home loss to NCAA Division I Grambling.

GRAMBLING---The Grambling State Lady Tigers basketball program have picked up two key acquisitions for the 2011-2012 basketball season in Savannah Carter and Cierra Ceazer.
Lauded as one of the top athletes in the nation Carter is rated in the top 100 by ESPN Hoop Girls. She is the #19th rated point guard in the country and rated the 2nd best player in the state of Oklahoma. She was recruited by Tennessee, Arkansas, Penn State and UCLA among others.

NEW ORLEANS Leonard Drake, who spent the early part of his basketball coaching career at Xavier University of Louisiana, died last week (Sept. 29, 2010) in Evansville, Ind. He was 56 years old. Drake, a Chicago native and a graduate of Brandywine High School (Niles, Mich.) and Central Michigan University, was a men's assistant at Xavier from 1979-85 and the head coach of XU's women in 1984-85. The Gold Nuggets were 13-16 that season, including victories against Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana.

As a 6-foot-4 forward he averaged 8.4 points and 5.8 rebounds in 97 career games and helped Xavier earn a share of the 2006-07 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular-season championship and qualify for the NAIA Division I National Championship in 2005, 2007 and 2008.

(DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – July 7, 2008)  It was officially announced on Monday morning that Stacy Beckton has been added as a fulltime assistant coach for the Bethune-Cookman University men’s basketball program.  Beckton joins the staff fulltime after serving a previous stint as a volunteer assistant coach.  Beckton comes to B-CU after serving the past season as the head boys’ varsity coach at nearby Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Fla.  He spent the last season in that capacity while being a longtime advisor at Mainland High School.

GREENSBORO, July 11, 2008 --  The North Carolina A&T interim athletics director has announced a four-year contract extension for women’s basketball coach Patricia-Cage Bibbs. Financial terms of the deal were disclosed.  Bibbs will begin working under her new contract immediately which means the terms of her old deal have been voided in place of her new arrangement. Bibbs’ new contract extends into the 2011-2012 season.

CITY OF WINSTON-SALEM (NC) SELECTED AS HOST OF THE 2009-2011 MEAC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT   - Patricia Porter  
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., May 27, 2008 - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced today that the City of Winston-Salem, North Carolina has been awarded the 2009-2011 MEAC Basketball Tournament. The 2009 Tournament is scheduled for March 9-14 and will be played at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.  “We are extremely excited that the basketball tournament is coming to a progressive city such as Winston-Salem,” said MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas. “We look forward to growing the tournament here and know that this City of Winston-Salem’s great infrastructure, its citizens, hotels and arena will prove to be a win-win for both sides.”

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Lamar Pittman, a 6-8, 230-pound power forward from Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., has signed a national letter of intent to attend North Carolina Central University and join the Eagles basketball program.Pittman earned 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region XV Second Team honors after averaging 19.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per contest during his sophomore season at Dutchess C.C. His 19.1 points per game made Pittman the third leading scorer in the region.

 
Powell, Kennebrew sign scholarships with Gold Nuggets  - ecassiere

NEW ORLEANS -- Two forwards -- Brittany Powell of Milwaukee, Wis., and Danielle Kennebrew of Atlanta, Ga. -- have signed scholarships to play women's basketball for Xavier University of Louisiana.  That increases to eight the Gold Nuggets' newcomers for the 2008-09 academic year. Half of those came during the spring signing period.

The addition of the three players brings the Lady Rams’ total to five signees.  “My staff and I have worked very hard over the last 3 weeks to secure this signing class,” WSSU head women’s basketball head coach Dee Stokes said, Thursday. “I am excited about these young ladies and look forward to seeing them grow in the Ram program. They are all exceptional students and should excel both on and off the basketball court.”

ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State, Friday (Apr. 11), announced its new head women’s basketball coach.  Doug Robertson, Jr., currently the women’s head basketball coach at Bowie State, has been named the new Lady Bulldog coach, athletics director Charlene Johnson said.
