Cassiere 03/03/09 NEW ORLEANS -- Shaun Dumas joined a select group of Xavier University of Louisiana men's basketball players when he was named Tuesday to the All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference team for the third consecutive season. Also representing Xavier on the 15-player team is first-time selection Kelechi Okoroha. GCAC head coaches selected the team. Dumas -- a 5-foot-11 senior guard from New Orleans and a 2004 graduate of St. Augustine High School -- likely will finish the season as the third player in 27 seasons to lead the Gold Rush in scoring, assists and steals in the same year. He is averaging 14.6 points, 4.3 assists and 3.2 steals entering Xavier's 7 p.m. Thursday game at Spring Hill in the quarterfinals of the GCAC Tournament. Dumas, a two-time GCAC Player of the Week this season, is second in NAIA Division I in steals and 32nd in assists. Dumas is the first Gold Rush player to be All-GCAC three times since Jimmie Wilder in 1990-91, 1991-92 and 1993-94. Dumas is the first to be All-GCAC three consecutive times since Juan Mercier in 1985-86 through 1987-88. Five Gold Rush players have been All-GCAC three times. The other two are Derrick Collins (1984-85 through 1986-87) and Merlin Peters (1989-90, 1990-91 and 1992-93). Okoroha -- a 6-foot-4 senior forward from Missouri City, Texas, and a 2004 graduate of Dulles High School -- is averaging 11.7 points and leads the team with 7.2 rebounds per game, a .559 field-goal percentage, 121 free throws, 178 free-throw attempts and 14 blocked shots. This past week he reached 1,000 points for his three-year career. Okoroha was the only men's or women's basketball player from the GCAC or an HBCU to be chosen this season to an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team.
