Hanton, Pope-Addison sign NLI to play at Winston-Salem State

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Winston-Salem State University head women’s basketball coach Dee Stokes announced the signing of Morgan Pope-Addison and Shawanda Hanton to National Letters of Intent on the first day of the late signing period. The two players are the first in the 2009 recruiting class for the Lady Rams. 

“We are excited to get two versatile players in Morgan Pope-Addison and Shawanda Hanton. My staff did an outstanding job of recruiting these young ladies from the July recruiting period until now,” Stokes said. “Even though it took all year, we are finally happy they are Rams. Morgan is a small/power forward is very athletic and love to play the game and Shawanda can play the 1-4 positions and has great size and shooting ability.” 

From Upper Marlboro, Md., Morgan Pope-Addision is a 6’0” forward who earned a number of high school honors. She is an All-League selection, earned All-Metro All-Metro honors from the Washington Post, and was a two-time All-County selection. She earned two varsity letters at Dr. Henry Wise High School. During her career, she averaged 10.3 points per game and 8.9 rebounds per game. She became the all-time leading girls’ rebounder last season with 525 career boards and was the first player in school history to pull in over 500 career rebounds. 

Shawanda Hanton is a 5’10” guard from Orangeburg, S.C. and earned a number of high school honors of her own. She is a three-time All-Conference player and a participant in the Nike Elite during the summer of 2008. She was also selected to play in the 2008-09 South Carolina Coaches Association North-South All-Star Game. As a three-time varsity letter winner at Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, she averaged 9.1 points per game to go along with five rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. She also led the Bruinettes to the 2008-09 AAA State Championship game. 

The Lady Rams will begin their fourth season of play at the NCAA Division I level and their third full season of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play this fall.
