Turnovers, foul troubles plague Lady Rams in tough loss

GREENSBORO, NC – The bragging rights will remain in Greensboro, N.C. for another year as the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (3-22) took a 84-46 loss at North Carolina A&T (19-6, 11-1 MEAC), Saturday afternoon. The Lady Rams gave a great effort and fought hard all game long, but were outmatched against the defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season champions.

Though the Lady Rams never lacked for effort in the game, the team could not get over the turnovers and early foul troubles that plagued the team all game long. For the game, the Lady Rams committed 31 turnovers and allowed the Lady Aggies to shoot a scorching 43.1% from the field in the game. The 82 points allowed in the game were the most points scored by a WSSU opponent this season.

The Lady Rams gave one of their best early efforts of the season as the Lady Rams were with the Lady Aggies for most of the first half, but foul troubles and turnovers proved costly to the Lady Rams as the team fell into a 25-41 deficit at the half. The Lady Rams opened the game with a great effort jumping out to an early 5-2 lead in the first two minutes of the half. It was a three-pointer by sophomore guard Rene Rector with just over 18 minutes left to play that put the Lady Rams out front. Though the Lady Rams would relinquish the lead over the next three minutes, the team would stay in the game holding the Lady Aggies within reach, 12-12 at the 13:39 mark.

The Lady Rams weathered the early storm by the Lady Aggies and kept the game tied 12-12 at the 13:39 mark. After another N.C. A&T score, Rector would keep the Lady Rams going with a three-pointer at the 12:48 mark that put the Lady Rams back on top, 15-14. The Lady Rams would keep the defending MEAC regular season champions close, holding the Lady Aggies to within one point, 22-23 with just over seven minutes left to play. The effort turned out to be the team’s last hurrah of the first half as foul troubles and some tenacious Lady Aggie defense would stymie the WSSU offense.

In the final half of the period, the Lady Rams were outscored 18-2 and held without a field goal in the final eight minutes of the game. The effort left the Lady Rams with a 25-41 deficit at the half.

The WSSU struggles continued early in the second half as North Carolina A&T ran off 13 unanswered points until a jumper by WSSU sophomore guard Corbin Bradford snapped the run with 16:30 left to play and left the Lady Rams trailing 27-54. The jumper would give the team some much needed life, but the Lady Rams would never get back into the game and ended the day with the loss.

The Lady Rams will next head to Norfolk, Virginia to take on the Norfolk State Lady Spartans in their final road game of the season.
