WSSU (7-16) to face Hampton (11-13, 5-6 MEAC) at 7:30 p.m.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Winston-Salem State men’s basketball team returns to action on Monday evening at the Lawrence Joel Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum Annex as they look to push their win streak to two games after defeating Howard this past Saturday evening at the Joel Coliseum Annex, 62-55. The Rams welcome Hampton to the Joel Coliseum Annex, a venue in which they have posted only one win this season (1-3) as they tip-off versus the Pirates at 7:30 p.m. in a MEAC league contest. The contest, between two Historically Black University rivals, will mark the second, and final, of two meetings between the two teams this season with the Rams looking to split the season series.

The Matchup

The Rams head into the contest sporting a 7-16 overall record and are 4-8 in the New Year as they are riding a one-game win streak following a 62-55 defeat of MEAC-member Howard on Saturday evening. The Pirates head into Monday’s matchup sporting an 11-13 (5-6 MEAC) overall record and are coming off of a 74-71 overtime loss at South Carolina State at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Gym in Orangeburg, S.C. on Saturday evening as the Pirates are now riding a one-game win streak. Hampton has lost four of their last five contests and are 5-7 in the New Year.

The Series

Hampton leads the all-time series against Winston-Salem State 23-15, dating back to when both teams were in Division II and the CIAA. Hampton was 20-15 against the Rams before jumping to Division I before the 1995-96 season. This will be just the fourth meeting all-time between these two teams since Hampton moved to the NCAA Division I; the Pirates faced Winston-Salem State twice last season, winning both meetings including a 67-62 win at the Convocation Center. WSSU last beat Hampton in 1995, taking the last game 66-65 before the Pirates moved to Division I. Hampton had won eight straight contests in the series before that loss. The Rams are transitioning to the Division I level and will be a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) – though Hampton’s games against the Rams this season will not count toward its MEAC record. The Pirates defeated the Rams by earlier this season 59-43 at the 2009 Freedom Classic Festival in Richmond, Va.

WSSU was led in scoring by Paul Davis as the sophomore forward scored 12 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the loss.
