WSSU’s nine hits not enough in rivalry loss

CARY, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-4) gave a great effort, but the team’s nine hits and seven runs just not enough for the Lady Rams to complete the sweep with a 10-7 loss at North Carolina Central (1-15), Tuesday afternoon. After falling behind early in the game, the Lady Rams fought their way back into the contest, but did not have enough to pull out the victory and complete the sweep of the rival Lady Eagles.

The Lady Rams had some struggles early in the game, allowing seven unanswered runs in the first two innings of the game, but the team fought their way back with a five-run third inning effort to pull within two runs of the home team, 5-7. The two teams would score one run each to leave the score 8-6 before a pair of Lady Eagle sixth inning scores to leave the Lady Rams with a four-run deficit 6-10 heading into the seventh inning.

In the final inning, the Lady Rams would manage just one seventh inning run to end the day with the 7-10 loss.

WSSU sophomore outfielder Candace Spinks led the Lady Rams’ attack with a 1-for-4 effort with a pair of runs scored and two RBI. Junior infielder Whitney Hall also added a pair of RBI in the game as well. Senior Whitney Wright was 2-for-three from the plate with a run scored.

Lady Ram senior pitcher Elyon Taylor (0-2) took the loss for the Lady Rams.

The Lady Rams will return to action next Friday when the team hosts the Hampton Lady Pirates in a double-header next Friday at South Park Field in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Lady Rams and Lady Pirates are scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
