Eagles Rookie Captures Basketball Honor for Third Time

DURHAM, N.C. - For the third time this season, North Carolina Central University freshman guard Jamar Briscoe has been named the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN) Division I Men's Basketball National Player of the Week, as chosen by an internet fan poll at www.HSRN.com. 

In two games last week (Feb 22-March 1), both against Longwood University, Briscoe amassed 71 points (35.5 avg.), 14 rebounds (7.0 avg.), 6 assists (3.0 avg.) and 5 steals (2.5 avg.), while shooting 26-of-44 (59.1 percent) from the field, 6-of-14 from three-point range and 13-of-15 from the free throw line. 

The Baltimore, Md. native scored a season-high 37 points to lead the Eagles to an 82-64 win over the Lancers on Saturday, Feb. 28, while adding a season-high eight rebounds.

Also on Feb. 28, Briscoe became the first NCCU rookie to ever score 500 points.

Briscoe is one of only two freshmen among the Top 100 scorers in NCAA Division I men’s basketball, ranking 71st among all scorer’s. In 29 games to date, he has accumulated 527 points (18.2 ppg), 78 assists (2.7 apg), 67 rebounds (2.3 rpg), and 51 steals (1.8 spg). 

Below are the listed performances of the other HSRN National Players of the Week for the week of February 22 thru March 1.

Division I – Women –

Brittanie Taylor-James – N.C. A&T (F., 6-0, Sr., Evanston, Illinois) extended the Lady Aggies win streak to three and helped her team clinch the 2008-09 MEAC women’s basketball regular-season title last week. Taylor-James averaged 22 points, 5.5 rebounds and three assists in the victories. She shot 89-percent (17-of-19) from the charity stripe and added two blocks and three steals during the two wins. 

Division II – Men –
Jerry Hollis – J.C. Smith (G, 6’5, 185, Jr., Charlotte, NC) guided the team to their second straight conference (CIAA) title this season. Hollis was selected to the 2009 CIAA All-Tournament team and named conference tournament MVP. He was also named player of the game in two of the three Golden Bull post season wins. In the championship game he scored 19 points and five rebounds

Division II – Women –
Wendy Stywalt – J.C. Smith (G, 5’8, Jr., Charlotte, NC) led the Golden Bulls to their first conference (CIAA) title in school history. Stywalt averaged 23 points per game during JCSU's three tournament match-ups. Stywalt was selected to the 2009 CIAA All-Tournament team and named Tournament Most Valuable Player.
