MEAC Announces Weekly Basketball Honors

Lady Aggies’ Taylor-James, Lady Bulldogs’ Wylie, and Lady Bears’ Rosario Earn Weekly Honors

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., February 16, 2009- North Carolina A&T’s Brittanie Taylor-James was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. South Carolina State’s Shontavious Wylie earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Morgan State’s Kristina Rosario earned the Defensive Player of the Week accolade.

Taylor-James (Forward, 6-0, Sr., Evanston, Illinois) aided the Lady Aggies to a 2-0 mark and extended their win streak to 12 with conference wins over Bethune-Cookman and Maryland Eastern Shore last week. Taylor-James posted 20 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals against Bethune-Cookman. She followed that performance with a career- and MEAC season-high 34 points, including 19 points in the second half against Maryland Eastern Shore. For the week, she averaged 27 points while shooting 59-percent (22-of-37) from the floor. 

Wylie (Guard/Forward, 5-8, Fr., Rock Hill, South Carolina) averaged 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games for the Lady Bulldogs. She recorded her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds against Morgan State. In a loss to Hampton she tallied 11 points and 7.0 rebounds. 

Rosario (Forward/Center, 6-2, Jr., Galloway, New Jersey) averaged 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.5 assists aiding the Lady Bears to a 2-0 mark last week. . Against South Carolina State, Rosario pulled down seven boards, blocked four shots and grabbed three steals. She followed that performance with nine rebounds and one blocked shot in a win over Florida A&M. Offensively, she added 20 points in the two games. 

Other Top Performers:

Corin Adams (MSU) totaled 34 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists, nine steals and three blocks to lead Morgan State to a 2-0 mark last week. 

Amber Bland (NCAT) averaged 20 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in two victories for the Lady Aggies. 

Whitney Cunningham (CSU) scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in a 69-61 win over Bethune-Cookman. 

Bernadette Fortune (HAM) averaged 9.5 points and three assists per game for the Lady Pirates. 

April McBride (UMES) averaged 21.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals in two games for the Lady Hawks. 

Jenell Moore (SCSU) totaled 22 points and 18 rebounds in two games for the Lady Bulldogs. 

Quanneisha Perry (HAM) guided the Lady Pirates with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds in a victory over South Carolina State. 

Chinyere Ukoh (HAM) tallied a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Maryland Eastern Shore.
