Lady Pirates Too Much For Lady Rams; WSSU Falls 65-48

Fortune and Finley score 18 each for Hampton; WSSU shoots 32.7 percent from the field

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Hampton University Lady Pirates turned a 10-point halftime advantage into a 65-48 victory on Monday evening at the Joel Coliseum Annex as the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University shot only 32.7 percent from the field in the loss as WSSU dropped to 3-21 on the season.

Bernadette Fortune and Ashlee Finley each scored 18 points for Hampton as the two players combined to hit 13 of their 23 field goal attempts including two three-pointers as the pair led the Lady Pirates to the victory and a season sweep over WSSU.

MaLisa Bumpus led the Lady Rams with a team-high 16 points in the contest as she hit four of her 10 field goals and hit all eight of her attempts from the free throw line as she led the Lady Rams in scoring for the seventh time since joining the team in December.

Joining Bumpus in double figures, Vontisha Woods scored 10 points and pulled down nine rebounds as he sophomore forward led the Lady Rams in rebounding for the 15th time in 2008-09.

The two teams would trade leads only six times in the contest as Hampton took a 34-24 lead into halftime as the Lady Pirates closed the first half with a 5-0 en route to an advantage which they would never relinquish.

Hampton pushed the lead to a game-high 19 points with 6:06 remaining in the contest as the Lady Pirates secured their 11th victory of the season.

With the loss, the Lady Rams drop to 3-21 on the season while Hampton improves to 11-12 overall on the year (7-4 MEAC).

WSSU returns to action on Feb. 21 at 2:00 p.m. as they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to face the MEAC-leading Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T on Saturday afternoon.
