Lady Vikings will face Saint Augustine’s in First Round of CIAA Tournament Tuesday

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Virginia Union Lady Panthers captured the season series over Elizabeth City State with an 84-61 victory Saturday afternoon at the RL Vaughan Center.

With the win the Lady Panthers solidify the ninth seed in next week’s CIAA Tournament in Charlotte. Subsequently the Lady Vikings will represent tenth seed in the ladies bracket and will face off against Saint Augustine’s College Tuesday night in a game tentatively scheduled for a 9:00pm start. 

At the 12:19 mark of the first half Tonaey Smith’s unconventional three-point play gave the Lady Panthers (8-17, CIAA 4-14) a double digit lead (14-4) that they would never relinquish. The Lady Vikings struggled offensively in the first half connecting on only 8-of-33 shots from the floor.

Additionally the Lady Vikings had no answers for VUU’s Kara Scott, who finished the afternoon with 27 points, 23 of which came in the second half. Scott also finished with 11 rebounds for a double-double. Smith scored 20 points while both Latasia Robinson and Dashia Chandler added 10 points apiece.

CIAA All-Rookie Kearah Jefferys scored a team high 21 points for ECSU while Ashley Anderson added 14 points.

The Lady Vikings will take on Saint Augustine’s College at the 2009 CIAA Tournament on Tuesday at the Time Warner Arena in Charlotte. Game time is tentatively slated for 9:00pm.
