Eagle’s McKee and Harper, and Bulldog’s Jackson Earn Top Weekly Honors

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., Feb. 23, 2009 – For the second consecutive week Coppin State’s Tywain McKee was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. Michael Harper, also of Coppin State, was selected as the Rookie of the Week while South Carolina State’s Josh Jackson was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

McKee (G, 6-2, 182, Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.) averaged 19 points, 9.5 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 4.0 steals in two wins last week for the Eagles. He shot an impressive 47.8 percent from the field and nailed 14-of-14 free-throws to help Coppin State extend its win streak to four. He recorded his fifth career double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while shooting 8-of-14, against Florida A&M. 

Harper (G, 6-3, 195, Fr., Milwaukee, Wis.) averaged 13 points with four rebounds, and two assists to guide the Eagles to a 2-0 finish last week. Against Florida A&M, Harper recorded 10 points, five boards, two assists, one blocked shot and one steal in the team’s victory. He was hot from 3-point range as he connected on 6-of-13 shots in the two games. 

Jackson (C, 6-8, 265, Sr., Haines, Fla.) averaged 10.5 rebounds as the Bulldogs finished 2-0 in conference play last week. He recorded a game high 13 rebounds in the team’s win over Norfolk State. He also grabbed down eight boards in the Bulldogs win over Howard. Offensively he recorded 24 points and dished out six assists. 

Other Top Performances 

Tavarus Alston (NCAT) connected on 50-percent of his baskets including 2-of-4 from long range to finish with 15 points, two rebounds, and three assists in a win over Delaware State. 

Jamie Boyer (UMES) tallied a career-high 23 points in the Hawks win over Norfolk State. 

Thomas Coleman (NCAT) tied the single-season school record for most blocks in a season (70). 

Marc Davis (UMES) recorded a career-high nine assists against Norfolk State. 

Michael Deloach (NSU) averaged 25.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists last week for the Spartans. 

Jason Flagler (SCSU) scored a combined 27 points with 13 rebounds to help the Bulldogs post a 2-0 mark in conference play last week. 

Reggie Holmes (MSU) averaged 19 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.0 steals as the Bears posted a 3-0 record last week. He also shot 50-percent from the 3-point arc (12-of-24).

Paul Kirkpatrick (HOW) collected 11 rebounds and five blocked shots last week for the Bison. 

Neal Pitt (UMES) recorded his eight double-double of the season with 21 points and 16 rebounds in the Hawks win over Norfolk State. 

CJ Reed (B-CU) scored a game-high 21 points with 8-of-8 from the charity stripe in the Wildcats win over Delaware State.

Alexander Starling (B-CU) collected 15 boards with two steals in the Wildcats win over Delaware State. 

Kevin Thompson (MSU) fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds against Towson in the team’s ESPNU’s BracketBusters matchup.

Jimmy Williams (SCSU) combined for 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals in the Bulldogs two conference victories last week.
