Fayetteville State Ousted 76-69 in Quarter-Finals of CIAA Tournament by the Lady Falcons
FSU to awaite shake-up in Atlantic Region Rankings

Charlotte, NC- With two regular-season wins over the Saint Augustine’s Lady Falcons, the Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos were ousted from the CIAA Tournament in their third match-up with an 69-76 loss. The Lady Falcons will advance to the semifinals on Friday February 27th. Erica Gilley (Lexington, NC) ended the night 6-of-10 from the floor and 9-of-12 in free throws for a team high 21 points. L’Oreal Price followed with 17 points while senior Chelsea Jeter (Baltimore, MD) had 13 in her final CIAA game. Fayetteville State was recently ranked fourth in the Atlantic Region with a 19-7 overall record.

The Lady Falcons entered the post season match-up barely over .500, 14-13. Off to a slow start, the Lady Broncos picked up after five minutes of play and emerged on a 8-0 run in 3:41 and led by 6, 17-11. FSU’s junior guard L’Oreal Price (Raleigh, NC) had two consecutive drives in the paint; all helpful to Fayetteville’s quick transition off of SAC turnovers from the Bronco half court press.

Senior forward Chelsea Jeter (Baltimore, MD) was an offensive force in the paint with rebounds and put-backs for field completions. Up by five, the Lady Broncos lost momentum and allowed the SAC to come back and advance within one of a game tie, 26-25. With paint aggression by SAC’s Keyona Bryant and Tiana Morris, the Lady Falcons sprung to a four-point lead, 26-30. With one minute left to play, a drive and a free throw by Fayetteville’s Price helped the Lady Broncos take the halftime lead by one point, 33-32.

Fayetteville State made 10-of-34 shot attempts for 29.4%. The Lady Falcons had a rebounding edge of 27-17. Saint Augustine’s was 41.7% in field goals.

In the second half, the Lady Broncos strengthened its play with baseline drives from Price and mid-range jumpers from Erica Gilley, only to secure the five-point lead, 48-43. Not too far behind, the Lady Falcons crept up within one of a tie with quick transitions from Morris and Bryant. Game tied at 51, Fayetteville’s Jeter, with an offensive rebound, put-back and foul secured a three-point advance for the Lady Broncos lead, 56-51, with 8:42 left.

Within two of the tie, SAC’s guard Whitney Griffis, with a paint drive, and a three-point jumper addition from Morris, the Lady Falcons took the lead, 59-61. With a fouled out Sikes on the bench, SAC kept the lead in the half’s final minutes. At the one minute mark, and up three, the Lady Falcons eased the half with quick drives and free throw completions to secure the game win by seven, 69-76. Bryant finished with game-high of 28 points and 13 rebounds, and was also named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Although fouled out, Sikes led the game with 12 rebounds.
