(CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- February 26, 2009) Saint Augustine’s College rode the hot shooting of junior guard Chris Jordan (Houston, TX/University of Alaska Fairbanks) to claim a surprisingly easy 77-53 victory over fifth-seeded Bowie State University Thursday afternoon in a quarterfinal contest during the 64th Annual CIAA Men’s Basketball tournament Thursday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Jordan, who scored all 15 of his points in the opening 20 minutes, helped the fourth-seeded Falcons (19-9 overall) top Bowie State for the third time this season and advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2007. Saint Augustine’s will meet the winner of the Virginia Union-Fayetteville State game at 9:00 p.m. Friday night.

Helping the balanced Falcons reach 19 wins for the third time in five years was a 14-point effort from sophomore forward Hayward Fain (Akron, OH/Garfield) and a 13-point performance by junior forward Kalvin Patterson (Rocky Mount, NC/Rocky Mount). Overall, 10 players scored for Saint Augustine’s, which made 50.9 percent of its shots (27-for-53).

Bowie State (15-13) was paced by junior forward Duke Crews (Hampton, VA/University of Tennessee) and junior center Cassin Diggs (Williamsport, PA/Cloud County Community College). Crews posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Meanwhile, Diggs scored 12 points.

In improving its record to 3-0 all-time against Bowie State in CIAA tournament games, Saint Augustine’s led by 19 at halftime and used a 17-2 run during a five-minute stretch of the second half to take control. That run helped the Falcons expand a 50-39 lead with 12 minutes, 27 seconds remaining to a 67-41 bulge with 7:57 remaining. Saint Augustine’s advantage peaked at 30 points.

After falling into a quick, 3-0 hole, Jordan got the Falcons off to a flying start by making his first three 3-point shot attempts. Jordan’s sterling shooting helped Saint Augustine’s race to a 17-7 lead less than five minutes into the game. Junior guard David Bucknor (Queens, NY/Nassau (NY) County Community College) scored a layup to give Saint Augustine’s a 20-9 lead with 13:02 remaining in the first half. The lead never dipped below double-digits.
