Lady Rams hit only 35 percent of their field goals in the loss

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Vontisha Woods’ 15 points and career-high 19 rebounds were not enough on Monday evening as the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats handed the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University a 54-50 defeat at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C. in MEAC women’s basketball action.

Woods led two WSSU players in double-figures as Rene Rector added 11 points and four rebounds in a losing effort as Winston-Salem State saw their two-game win streak snapped en route to falling to 5-23 on the season.

The Lady Rams jumped out to an early lead in the contest as the two teams traded advantages six times in the contest and were tied on five other occasions.

First half action would see the two teams separated by no more than four points during the first 20 minutes of play as Bethune-Cookman held the slimmest of all possible margins heading into the locker room at halftime as the Lady Wildcats clung to a one-point advantage at 21-20.

Second half action would see the Lady Rams fall behind by as many at 15 points with 7:27 remaining in the contest as Bethune-Cookman looked to pull away from the host Lady Rams.

However, WSSU displayed the poise of a veteran team as they closed the margin to only four points before running out of time in the contest as Bethune-Cookman earned their 12th victory of the season.

Led by Woods’ 15 points and double-digit rebounds, coupled with 11 points from Rector, the Lady Rams were unable to earn their third consecutive victory due in large part to a shooting performance that saw WSSU hit only 19 of their 54 field goal attempts (.352).

Leading the way for the Lady Wildcats, Demetria Frank recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds as she led three B-CU players in double figures. Joining Frank in double-digits were Eunisha Proctor and Sarah Bolden who each added 11 points in the victory.

The loss drops WSSU to 5-23 on the season while Bethune-Cookman improves to 12-15 overall (4-11 MEAC) with the victory.

Winston-Salem State returns to action on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at 5:30 as they play host to the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State at the Joel Coliseum in the Lady Rams’ final action of the season.
