Track, baseball student athletes earn weekly honors

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Freshman Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) and senior
Russel Deutschmann (Baden, Ontario) have been named University of
Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Athletes of the Week for the period ending May
17.

Jones of the women's track and field team qualified for NCAA East Regional
competition in the 800 meters in a personal-best time of 2:08.14 at the Georgia
Tech Invitational on May 16. In all, 14 different Hawks have qualified to run at
regionals at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T on May 29-
30.

Deutschmann of the baseball team went 3-for-8 in the Hawks' two losses at the
MEAC Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla., last week. He had one single in
UMES' 12-2 defeat at the hands of Florida A&M and followed that up with two
more knocks against Norfolk State in a 4-0 setback to close the season.

The first baseman's performance landed him on the all-tournament team, one of
two Hawks to earn that distinction this year.

The Hawks ended the year as arguably one the most improved teams at UMES
with a 14-42 overall mark, including a 9-9 record in conference play.
