Senior, sophomore combine for five of Hawks 10 hits

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Senior first baseman Russel Deutschmann (Baden,
Ontario) and sophomore designated hitter Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.)
were named to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference baseball all-tournament
team, the league announced Sunday following its championship game at Jackie
Robinson Ballpark.

The duo tallied five of UMES' 10 base hits in the tournament.

Deutschmann was 3-for-8 at the plate in the Hawks' two losses in the
tournament. He earned one single in the first game against No. 3 Florida A&M, a
12-2 defeat, and picked up two more singles in a 4-0 setback to sixth-seeded
Norfolk State.

Chaikowsky was 2-for-6 with a pair of doubles and an RBI to finish the season as
the team leader in two baggers with 13. He had an RBI double in the second
inning against the Rattlers to put the Hawks up, 2-0.

Bethune-Cookman won its fourth consecutive MEAC baseball title, 15-9, over
North Carolina A&T Sunday.

UMES ended the season with an eight-win improvement over its 2008 campaign,
finishing with a 14-42 record including a 9-9 mark in conference play.
