GAME-ENDING, BASES LOADED DOUBLE PLAY PRESERVES  NCCU BASEBALL SWEEP OF ST. AUGUSTINE'S

     DURHAM, NC – North Carolina Central University turned a game-ending, bases loaded double play to hold on to an 8-7 game two victory and preserve a doubleheader sweep of conference foe Saint Augustine's College on Tuesday (March 27) inside the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
     After cruising to a 16-6 win in the first contest, NCCU trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning of the nightcap. The Eagles then scored five unanswered runs during the next three innings, including a two-out RBI single by junior Robert Landis (Winston-Salem, N.C.) in the bottom of the sixth, to go ahead 8-5. 
     With two outs in the top of the seventh and final inning, St. Augustine's scored on a wild pitch and an infield error to pull to within 8-7. The Falcons loaded the bases after NCCU relief pitcher Gene Suarez (Fayetteville, N.C.) hit SAC shortstop Kevin Johnson with a pitch. Moments later, NCCU second baseman Kurt Wilson (Atlanta, Ga.) flipped the ground ball to shortstop Justin Goodson, who slid his foot across second base and fired to first baseman Tye Gray (Waldorp, Md.) for the final out and the victory.
     After earning the game one victory on the mound, Landis hit 4-for-4 as a designated hitter in game two with four singles, two runs batted in and a run scored. NCCU sophomore pitcher Marcus Moore (Fayetteville, N.C.) won game two with five strikeouts in six innings of work, while Suarez picked up his second save of the season.
     In the opener, NCCU's Goodson and senior Marcus Mack (Fayetteville, N.C.) each had two hits and three runs batted in, while sophomore center fielder Oliver Jenkins added two hits and three runs scored for the Eagles.
     In the doubleheader, St. Augustine's junior catcher/pitcher Justin Vias went 5-for-8 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored, including a two-run home run in the first inning of game one.
