Itta Bena, Mss. --- Although the threat of lightening in the area
brought an early end to the Mississippi Valley State baseball game
against the University of Central Arkansas, it didn’t come soon enough
for the Delta Devils as they suffered a 29-2 route at the hands of the
Bears.

The Bears put the sixth inning game away early as they pounded Delta
Devils’ starting pitcher Rudy Casias for eight runs on seven hits in
two-thirds inning work and went on to hold an imposing 9-0 lead after
the first.  Valley reliever Mark Johnston didn’t fair much better
against the scorching bats of the Bears, who pounded out a total of 28
hits for the game, as they pelted Johnston for 10 runs form 11 hits in
an inning and a third.

Down 19-0 after two and a half innings the Delta Devils made their way
to the scoreboard when second baseman Kyle Latiolais led off the third
with a bunt single, followed by a single into leftfield by Ross
Myers.  Sean Bard would then single, scoring Latiolais and Myers would
score on a single by Tony Ohlssen.

Valley was led at the plate by Ohlssen who recorded two hits with an
RBI, on the mound Casias picked up the loss to drop his record to 1-5
on the season.

The Bears had three players to record four hits.  Craig Nyborg went
four-for-six with three runs scored and four RBIs, Jonathan Ashworth
was four-for-five with five runs scored and four RBIs and Scott Cline
finished four-for-five with four runs scored and sven RBI’s.  Nyborg,
Ashworth, Cline, and pinch hitter Chris Houk each recorded a home
run.  Grant Gatlin picked up the win on the mound going five innings
with six strikeouts.

Valley (11-18, 6-4 SWAC E) will return to action tomorrow night when
they travel to Hammond, LA to face the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana
at 6:30 p.m.
