ELIZABETH
CITY, NC- The Virginia State University
Trojans earned a doubleheader sweep over
Elizabeth City State University 11-4 and
14-13 Sunday afternoon at Knobbs Creek.
In game one,
the Vikings managed eight hits but they
stranded seven runners. ECSU got on the
board first in the bottom of the first
inning on a two-run homer by Nick Johnson.
The Trojans quickly negated that lead in the
next inning reeling off five runs of their
own. Defensively they held ECSU scoreless
over the next four innings even though the
Vikings did score their final two runs in
the bottom of the sixth.
In game two
it was déjà vu all over again as in his
opening at bat in the first inning, Johnson
again dialed long distance to put ECSU up
2-0. With the score 8-3 in favor of the home
team, the visiting Trojans rallied to score
five runs in the top of the sixth to tie the
game 8-8. ECSU regained the lead in their
half of the sixth via a sacrifice fly by
Jacob Harrell and an RBI single by Troy
Andrews. VSU would respond by again tying
the game on a 2RBI single by Charles Monroe.
After a go ahead run was scored, the Trojans
went up 14-10 on a 3-run smash by short stop
Michael Knight. ECSU attempted a
final-at-bat rally scoring three, but fell
short by one run when Brandon Cotton
grounded to third baseman Andrew Holt to end
the game.
With the win
the Trojans become the only team to sweep
their season series against the Vikings
(16-11, CIAA 10-6) four games to none.
ECSU will
return to the diamond on Monday, April 9 as
they play host to Saint Paul’s College. Game
time is slated for a 1:00pm start at Knobbs
Creek.
