HORNETS SNAP 3-GAME SLIDE WITH 4-3 WIN

– It took 10 innings, but the Delaware
State Hornets (19-18-2) got the upper
hand in a 4-3 win over Navy at Soldier
Field on Wednesday afternoon. The win
snapped a three game losing streak for
the Hornets. “This was a great win for
us, because we got a big conference
series with N.C. A&T this weekend,” said
Hornets head coach J.P. Blandin.
Justin
Bittner got his first win in only his
third appearance of the season as he
came in and pitched two solid innings
allowing no hits.
The
Hornets got on the scoreboard first in
the second inning when Justin Bittner
singled scoring Anthony Boyer. Boyer
got on base on a fielding error and
advanced to second when Alex Carter
walked.
In the
third, Tom Shelley singled to left
field, stole second and advanced to
third on an error by Navy catcher Steven
Soares. The Hornets extended their lead
to 2-0 when Shelley scored on a wild
pitch.
The top of
the fourth saw the Midshipmen tie the
score 2-2, when Mike Hoosier singled to
left field, scoring Joshua Martinez and
Kendall Bolt. Martinez got on base on
a walk and Bolt hit a double down the
left field line.
Ryne
Scheiwe started the bottom of the fourth
with a walk and Boyer singled to center
field advancing Scheiwe to third. Alex
Carter reached on a fielder’s choice,
scoring Scheiwe for a DSU 3-2 lead.
Navy tied
the game 3-3 at the top of the eighth
inning when Martinez singled to center
field scoring Speciale.
In the 10th
with two outs, Jarrett Bibb singled to
right field and then stole second and
advanced to third on an error by Navy’s
Soares. Scheiwe, who went 2 for 4,
smacked a single to left field, scoring
Bibb’s for the win.
The
Hornets will return to action this
weekend when they host the Aggies of
N.C. A&T in a three game series. The
two will meet in a double header on
Saturday with the first game starting at
1:00 p.m.
