Foss George Lead Spartans to Series Win Over Delaware State Matt Michalec
NORFOLK, Va. — Moriba George (St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.) matched his season high with four hits and swiped a season-high three bases, while senior right hander Luke Foss (Norfolk, Va.) pitched a complete game as Norfolk State topped Delaware State 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
Foss (6-2) pitched his first complete game of the season, scattering nine hits as the Spartans improved to 19-17 overall, 8-6 in the MEAC. The Hornets (18-17-2, 8-4) scored all their runs in the final two innings.
Juan Serrano (Naugatuck, Conn.) added three hits and Lyall Foran (Delta, British Columbia) two as the Spartans out-hit DSU 15-9.
NSU picked up three runs in the first two innings. Rocco Savage (Tampa, Fla.) got the scoring started with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first off DSU starter Tony Tevis (4-4). Jerrod Farley (Chester, Va.) followed with a bases-loaded walk to force in NSU’s second run.
In the second, George started a two-out rally with a single to right. He then stole second and scored on Serrano’s RBI single.
The score remained 3-0 until the seventh. George led off with his third single of the day and stole second, his third theft of the afternoon. George went to third on Serrano’s third base hit of the day and scored when Foran followed with an RBI single. Savage made it 5-0 later in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, which scored Serrano from third.
The Hornets broke up Foss’ shutout bid in the top of the eighth on Brandon Gravely’s RBI single, scoring Tom Shelley from second. That broke a string of 16 1/3 scoreless innings from the NSU pitching staff in the series. DSU hadn’t scored since the seventh inning in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
DSU drew within 5-3 in the ninth on pinch hitter Randy Boyer’s two-run homer. But Foss retired the next two batters to close it out.
Gravely and Alex Carter each went 2-for-4 for DSU. Tevis took the loss, allowing 12 hits and five runs in six-plus innings.
The Spartans host a doubleheader with Longwood on Wednesday at 3 p.m. -NSU-
