Bethune-Cookman University baseball
student-athletes
Joseph
Gautier and
Orlando
Bacon each collected
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference weekly
honors this week following a 3-2
campaign for the Wildcats.
Joseph Gautier was selected as this
week’s MEAC Pitcher of the Week after an
8-0 shutout of Savannah State
University. Gautier, a 5-foot-10,
165-pouund sophomore from Dorado, Puerto
Rico, stood tall against Savannah
State—ranked #1 in the latest
installment of the Black College
Baseball poll. The left-hander
nicknamed
Gio
was an artist on the mound as he painted
the black and allowed just six (6) hits
in a complete-game shutout of the Tigers
on Sunday.
Gautier struck-out a career-high seven
batters, and registered the first
complete-game and first shutout of his
career at B-CU. The Wildcats took the
series against SSU, 2-1. This was the
first award for Gautier as Pitcher of
the Week in his career.
For B-CU, it was their second shutout of
the season. The ‘Cats also shutout
Mercer 5-0 in the first game of a
doubleheader on Feb. 5 in Daytona Beach,
Fla.
As for freshman Orlando Bacon, he was
named as this week’s MEAC Rookie of the
Week following stellar performances
against Jacksonville and Savannah
State. Bacon, a 5-foot-9, 145-pound
outfielder/pitcher from Tampa, Fla., was
highly-touted out of high school as a
steal
for the Wildcats program. He has seen
time as a designated hitter, outfielder
and pitcher this season.
Serving as the designated hitter in the
rubber match against SSU, Bacon batted
.250 for the week, including drawing
three walks and scoring one run. For
the freshman, this was his first award
as Rookie of the Week this season.
The Wildcats will be in action tomorrow
night (Mar. 20) against Jacksonville at
6 p.m. in a home contest held at Jackie
Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach.
