(VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Apr. 9, 2007)
Bethune-Cookman University baseball
student-athletes Luis Gonzalez and Hiram
Burgos have been named as this week’s
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player
and Pitcher of the week as released by
the home office in Virginia Beach, Va.
Luis Gonzalez, a third baseman for the
Wildcats, picked up this week’s MEAC
Player of the Week award after batting a
sizzling .533 at the plate with eight
runs and six hits in 14 trips to the
plate. Gonzalez helped the Wildcats in
a 2-2 record this week, as well as
posting two doubles against Stetson
University last Tuesday in nearby DeLand,
Fla.
Gonzalez, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound senior
from Cayey, Puerto Rico, not only
performed offensively, but defensively
as well for the Wildcats. From his
third base position, he collected five
putouts and five assists on the week
with zero (0) errors. This is his first
Player of the Week award at Bethune-Cookman
University.
Hiram Burgos, a 5-foot-11 sophomore
right-hander from Cayey, Puerto Rico,
kept it in the city—if you will, as he
helped to keep Cayey hot with this
week’s MEAC Pitcher of the Week award.
Burgos was phenomenal on the mound in
two appearances this week, including a
starting job. This is his first Pitcher
of the Week award at B-CU.
In his first-ever MEAC start, Burgos
helped the Wildcats in collecting their
seventh consecutive conference series
victory with an 8-0 shutout of North
Carolina A&T State University. Burgos
spread out three hits and just one walk
in five innings on the hill. He also
fanned seven batters while picking up
his second win of the season.
Earlier in the week, Burgos saw 1.1
innings of time out of the bullpen
against a red-hot Stetson team. In that
game, he allowed zero hits and
struck-out four batters as well.
Tyler Winch out of the University of
Maryland-Eastern Shore collected this
week’s Rookie of the Week award by
batting a blistering .750 at the plate
with helping the Fighting Hawks take a
series split against conference foe
Norfolk State. Winch batted a perfect
4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs
against the Spartans.
