BASEBALL- On the final day of the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Spring Sports Championships, the Stillman College baseball team put forth a valiant effort but came up short in the championship game. The Albany State University Rams beat the Tigers 6-4 to win the SIAC baseball title Sunday afternoon. Stillman (26-23) got on the scoreboard first, scoring a run in the second inning. Albany State (23-26) grabbed the lead in the fourth inning, scoring three runs. Stillman reclaimed the lead with three runs in the fifth, and that was the only scoring until Albany State scored the final three runs of the game in the ninth inning. Edner Castro picked up the win, going 4.1 innings, allowing only two hits, while striking out two. Floyd Patterson went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Rams, with a run scored. Eric Love made his only hit count as he homered in the fourth inning. David Elsberry (4-3) suffered the loss for Stillman. He pitched a complete game and allowed six runs on 10 hits, while striking out two. Stephen Hinton led the Stillman offense going 2-for-4 at the plate, including two runs and a RBI. Kevin Long also recorded two hits and a RBI. Elsberry got a hit and a run and Cody White added a hit and a run in the losing effort. Coach Edward Taylor of ASU was named the Outstanding Coach of the Tournament and Eric love was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Albany State Rams earn the conference’s automatic birth to the Division II Baseball Regional Tournament. NCAA DII Regional action begins May 18, 2006 at a campus site yet to be determined. |
