MBC Baseball Date: Monday, February 11, 2002 "Marqus Johnson" Wolverines Scores First Two Wins in SSU Tournament. Opening the season with a 6 game winless streak the Wolverines finally enter the win column with an 8-3 win over the 2001 SIAC Champions Albany State in Savannah, GA. After dropping game one to Albany State 12-7, were the Wolverines put 9 ASU players on base via walk or hit by pitch as well as committed 5 errors. After losing two straight games to the Rams, 8-3 in Miami, Florida, Morris Brown finally put it together for an 8-3 win in the third of five games against ASU this year. Freshman pitcher Jeremiah Fielder even his record at 1-1 as he tossed a compete game gem. Fielder threw seven innings while surrendering only one earned run and struck out 10 Rams batters. To compliment the great pitching effort of Fielder, Savannah native Che Thompson hit a first inning glam slam to left field. Game three saw the Wolverines break out the bats as they pounded Saint Augustine’s College for 17 hits in the 9-2 win. Freshman Anthony Clay Jr. extended his season opening-hitting streak to nine, ties a school record, going three for four with two RBI’s and a double. Clay is leading the team with 14 hits and a .500 batting average. Pitcher Barry Mincey would get his first win of the season as he threw a complete game. Other notable for the weekend were Steve Stodghill (5 for 10, 2 sb), Anthony Austin (4 for 9, 1 hr, 3 RBI, 3 bb), Mincey (4 for 10, 2 2b) and Thompson ( 3 for 9, 1 hr, 6 RBI) |
