GRAMBLING -- Grambling State makes a last stand push for a bid in the Southwestern Athletic Conference West Division road series at Texas Southern this weekend.
The teams will play doubleheaders today and Saturday beginning at noon at TSU field in Houston.
Grambling currently stands in fourth place in the SWAC West at 20-22 overall and 12-16 in the SWAC West while Texas Southern is in second at 21-22 and 19-10. The Tigers are battling Arkansas-Pine Bluff (23-24, 14-16) for third place and final divisional SWAC championship berth.
The SWAC Championship tournament features the top three finishers from each division and will begin next Thursday at Centenary College in Shreveport.
GSU needs at last two games to tie UAPB and three to move ahead of the Golden Lions, who could play two rain make-up games against Southern early next week.
"We really need to go in and sweep TSU," GSU coach Wilbert Ellis said. "We have to get at least two and pull into a tie with Pine Bluff. But the more we win, the better off we are."
GSU outfielder James Cooper leads the Tigers with a .387 batting average while first baseman Alberto Campbell has belted 12 home runs and leads the team with 40 RBIs.
The Tigers will throw righthander Roy Foster in game one and lefty Melvin Toliver in game two against Texas Southern.
Foster stands at 6-4 on the season with a 2.98 ERA and 7.81 strikeouts per game while Toliver is 5-4 with a 3.99 ERA and 9.26 strikeouts per game.
